Grid computing enables the sharing of computing power. This allows high performance computing, management and service. Grid computing is different from the traditional supercomputer, which uses multiple processors linked over a bus to perform parallel computing. Instead, grid computing utilizes a network of computer to execute programs. The main problem with using multiple computers is that it’s difficult to distribute tasks across the computers.
Parallel processing is when multiple CPUs are used to execute separate sections of a programme simultaneously. Geographic Information Science is concerned with how to process and dispose of the vast amount of spatial information that remote sensing and surveying devices provide.
In order to solve these issues, much research has been done in the area of GIS parallel processing. This is the use of multiple computers or a single computer that has multiple processors to perform the same task. Clustering and grid computing are two of the more common types of distributed computation.
